The Vocational School Centre (BSZ), Freiberg\/Germany, named after Freiberg\u2019s famous scientist Julius Weisbach, bundles non-university education in Freiberg. With the newly installed technical school training to become a mining technician, it is now possible to pursue a complete professional career as a miner in Freiberg in addition to an academic one. The lignite extracted in 2021 had a net calorific value of 39.3 Mtce. Of that output 111.5 Mt, or about 88.3\u2009%, were used in utility power plants supplying the general public. This translates into an increase of 19.8\u2009% compared to the previous year. The sharp increase in power generation from lignite was primarily due to the marked increase in the consumption of electric power, the substantially reduced input of electric power from wind power as well as the drastic increases in the natural gas prices.
