  • Sandvik introduces a 16 l Stage V engine for its largest truck Toro™ TH663i

Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions has released a new engine option for its largest truck, Toro™ TH663i (Figure 1). This fuel efficient 16 l Stage V engine from Volvo Penta is powerful and reliable, delivering 585 kW output. The engine and the truck have been designed to work together seamlessly, for strong performance in underground mines.

The Toro™ TH663i truck’s Stage V engine is designed to meet the requirements for non-road engines in the power range over 560 kW. In this power range, instead of fitting the engines with diesel particulate filters, other means are utilized to achieve reduced emissions. The Toro™ TH663i truck engine’s exhaust after treatment contains a Selective Catalytic Reduction system (SCR). The SCR uses diesel exhaust fluid to reduce emissions of NOx without sacrificing the truck’s performance or fuel efficiency. The common rail injection and dual-stage turbo charging provide high power density, low fuel consumption, low noise and low emissions. Further, optimal cooling solutions in the engine minimize parasitic energy losses. The Toro™ TH663i Stage V engine system is not equipped with a diesel particulate filter, simplifying the system.

The new Stage V engine option requires ultra-low sulphur fuel and low-ash engine oil to operate. However, in addition to running on traditional fossil diesel, the Toro™ TH663i truck can also use paraffinic diesel fuels that meet the requirements of the EN 15940 standard. Renewable paraffinic diesel fuel considerably reduces greenhouse gas footprint and the emissions of CO, CO2, hydrocarbons (HC), NOx and diesel particulate matter (DPM) in the engine exhaust. The truck can use different blends of fossil diesel fuel and paraffinic fuel without limitations. There are no precautions or pre-work required when shifting from fossil to paraffinic fuel, which makes it flexible and user friendly.

During the past a couple of years, the Toro™ TH663i truck has benefitted from several significant improvements. In 2019, Sandvik introduced a new transmission to increase productivity, improve reliability and reduce truck operating costs, as well as a new durable and maintenance-friendly cooler with outstanding corrosion resistance and long component lifetimes. Last year brought updates to the truck’s automation performance, as Sandvik’s AutoMine® offering introduced its AutoMine® for Trucks, enabling autonomous truck haulage not only underground but also on the surface, which is an inevitable part of a truck’s normal duty cycle at numerous mines.

  • Sandvik introduces Stage V compliant underground loaders – no compromises to performance

After extensive development work and thorough field testing, Sandvik prepares to launch its first Stage V compliant underground loaders for hard rock mining applications. Achieved with more than 10,000 h of LHD testing underground, on multiple customer sites in Europe, and with millions of hours of on-highway experience from Volvo, the new technology meets customer expectations, equipment performance requirements and the most stringent emission regulations valid at the moment. The base engine and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) purifier are proven Volvo technology, enhanced now with a ceramic Diesel Particle Filter (DPF).

As a result of the collaborative product development work, the engine – delivered by Volvo Penta – and Sandvik load and haul equipment work seamlessly together to maintain productivity and reliability in the most challenging environments. The benefits of Stage V compliant loaders include reduced amount of particles in the diesel exhaust, helping the mines to improve air quality underground. Additionally, the Stage V loaders are capable of operating with up to 3 % reduced fuel consumption compared to the lower Stages.

Another key enabler for the equipment availability is passive regeneration of the diesel particulate filter; the soot accumulated in the filter is burned off during equipment normal operation, without the need for frequent stand still regeneration. A new feature in the Stage V engine is the modulating engine brake which enables the operator to adjust the engine braking power, allows better control of vehicle speed downhill, and minimizes brake and transmission overheating and brake wear. Both the modulating engine brake and the passive regeneration contribute to the equipment high uptime.

Added benefits of the Stage V engines include high altitude operating capability, reaching as high as up to 3,500 m above the sea level, and lower noise levels compared to previous Stages.

Sandvik will be adding Stage V compliant loaders and trucks to its offering as of early 2020, starting with the newest intelligent loaders Sandvik LH517i (Figure 1) and Sandvik LH621i. The Stage V engines will be globally available as options but requiring ultra-low sulphur fuel and low-ash engine oil to operate.
