New KML cab for extreme conditions in open mining operations

Cab for mining excavator developed with and by Liebherr

Special cabs for the most extreme requirements – the manufacturer KML from Lahr in the Black Forest is one of the technology leaders in this field. The latest development again supports the use in mining and opencast mining. The new mining cab, which was developed in close cooperation with Liebherr, provides Liebherr’s excavator operators with a comfortable modern control center. Following MinExpo 2021 in the USA, the Mining Cab will now also be exhibited in Europe during bauma 2022, the world’s leading trade fair for construction machinery, building material machines, mining machines, construction vehicles and construction equipment, in Munich.

Mining and excavation require extremely robust vehicles that excavate iron ore, coal, oil sands, rock and much more. The extreme conditions in mining demand extreme quality. The new mining cab from KML is not only particularly robust and durable, but also enables comfortable and relaxed working.

In close cooperation with Liebherr-Mining Equipment Colmar SAS, KML has developed a completely new customized solution. KML is now using it to optimally equip the new Liebherr Mining Excavator R 9600 in the 600-ton class. The KML special cab – significantly larger than previous mining models – is simply mounted on top of the substructure. “The intensive cooperation with Liebherr in Colmar is a model of success for KML,” says Managing Director Stefan Lochmann. “With our high-tech cabs, we serve all customer requirements in open pit mining as a specialist.” The new KML cab dampens vibrations and noise, helping the excavator operator to work in a balanced and quiet manner in open-pit mining. Liebherr’s mining excavators are used, among other things, in the extraction of gold, diamonds, platinum, coal, iron ore or copper on all continents.

Robust, durable and significantly larger with around 20% more volume, the cab not only offers more space but also improved comfort for the excavator operator. Double- shell insulation ensures optimum soundproofing and better thermal protection. Excavator operators are thus well protected against hot or cold outside temperatures as well as noise. Almost the entire cab structure, and thus the interior of the operator’s cab, has been fitted with sound-absorbing artificial leather. The new cab also allows improved all-round visibility and enables the air circulation of hot and cold air to be regulated individually and in many gradations. No matter in which continent and under which outside temperature conditions the mining excavator is used – the excavator operators in the KML cab always work in a comfortable climatic space.

KML designed and supplied the complete cabin structure for Liebherr, including insulation, wiping technology, air technology and glazing. However, KML does not rest, but invests in continuous development and optimization. At present, a new variant of the cab is already in production. It adopts further customer requests.
