  • bauma 2019: Sustainability in mining as an opportunity

Sustainability is absolutely the trend topic today, in mining as well. The focus extends well beyond the areas of energy consumption and the use of resources. All industries are currently searching for alternative, low-priced and environmentally friendly raw materials and energy sources. Global discussions and technology transfers are the key factors in efforts to successfully encourage sustainability in mining. bauma 2019 will serve as the perfect platform for the focal point of mining.

Less energy, fewer resources: The demands being placed on the future of the mining industry are clear. This transformation affects all aspects of mining – in every region of the world. For this reason, the issue of sustainability is playing an increasingly important role for the industry. The aim is not only to optimize the use of energy and resources, but also to introduce alternative energies and new technologies. Those who act will be rewarded. New energy can be produced in places where coal was once mined, or hollowed-out slag heaps are turned into interesting storage sites. New technologies are not just environmentally and economically fueling this trend. They are creating benefits for society as well.

In a reflection of this, the industry’s interest in sustainable mining is rising. The coal, iron and steel industry is transforming itself by miniaturizing drilling technologies and analysis tools. These enhancements increase the efficiency of site development and improve mining processes. This applies both to pre- and post-mining operations that require comprehensive planning. Potential can be identified and tapped by including all relevant actors in the effort.

The topic of sustainability will be a focal point of bauma 2019 for this reason. As part of a focus section on mining, bauma 2019 will bring together all key players in the industry and showcase new technologies and trends in the coal, iron and steel industry. Manufacturers like ABB, DSI, FAM Förder-anlagen, FLSMIDTH, Haver Niagara, Komatsu, KGHM Zanam, Miller Technology, Paus, Siemens, ThyssenKrupp Industrial, WEIR Minerals and many others will present their highlights and innovations.

Visitors to the trade fair will find an up-to-date overview of all exhibitors online in the bauma exhibitor directory. More information about the trade fair is available at www.bauma.de. (IMAG/Si.)

  • bauma 2019: More exhibitors, more visitors, more opportunities

Six months before the start of the world’s leading trade fair for construction machinery, bauma, on 8th April 2019, Messe München/Germany can already announce a new record number of exhibitors. More than 3,500 exhibitors from 55 countries will be there – almost 100 more than in 2016 (Figure 1). bauma PLUS allows even more companies to present their products and services. Virtual reality will bring the construction site into the trade fair hall. What is more, the 600,000 visitor mark is ready to be passed.
“The industry is booming, which is also reflected in the growth of bauma. We’ve taken account of the rise in demand and expanded our site in eastern Munich to 614,000 m2. Our aim is to offer a platform to as many exhibitors as possible. With bauma 2019, we continue to surpass ourselves – also digitally,” says Klaus Dittrich, Chairman and CEO of Messe München.
For the first time, visitors to Hall B0 will be able to experience the industry virtually – thanks to virtual and augmented reality. This is made possible through a combination of images, sound, or sensor feedback, such as wind. “The booths have size limits, the digital areas are limitless. With new virtual offerings, we are bringing the construction site into the trade fair and expanding our digital portfolio,” says project manager Mareile Kästner.
However, this downturn now seems to have bottomed out. The significant increase in incoming orders of 17 % in the first months of 2018 is considered to be a clear sign of economic recovery in this sector, as is the increase in turnover of 10 % recorded in the same period.
Another new feature are the bauma PLUS models that bring more exhibitors to the fair. With bauma PLUS ONSITE exhibitors can present their company on a compact area. bauma PLUS MOVE is a flexible co-working area where visitors can meet exhibitors.
Not only an opportunity for companies. “This allows visitors to get a more comprehensive picture of the providers in the industry. With the help of our new products, we also want to pass the 600,000 visitor mark and extend our status as the world’s biggest trade fair,” explains Klaus Dittrich.
Visitors can find the latest list of exhibitors online in the bauma exhibitor database. More information about the trade fair is available at www.bauma.de. (IMAG/Si.)

  • bauma 2019

All branches of industry, all leading manufacturers, all important innovations: Those who have been here before always come back. The World’s Leading Trade Fair bauma is the leading platform for experts who deal with construction and building-material machines, construction vehicles, construction equipment and mining machines.

    bauma—the heartbeat of our industry

This is where international key players meet. This is where significant new developments are presented. This is where suppliers and solutions come together perfectly.

The 32nd Edition of the World’s Leading Trade Fair bauma takes place in Munich from April 8–14, 2019. Once again, the 2016 exhibition set several new records—confirming yet again its leading role as the largest trade fair in the world.

    Key facts about bauma 2016
    • 605,000 m² of exhibition space
    • 3,425 exhibitors from 58 countries
    • 583,736 visitors from 219 countries
    • 138,929 visitors from the mining sector
    • 1,423 journalists and media representatives from 47 countries

In addition to the world’s leading trade fair bauma, Messe MĂĽnchen has extensive skill in organizing additional international construction machinery trade fairs. For example, Messe MĂĽnchen organizes bauma CHINA in Shanghai and bauma CONEXPO INDIA in Gurgaon/Delhi together with the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) as well as bauma CONEXPO AFRICA in Johannesburg.

In December 2015, Messe MĂĽnchen successfully expanded its portfolio further with the purchase of the leading Russian construction machinery trade fair CTT, now renamed bauma CTT RUSSIA. In March 2017, the bauma NETWORK was again expanded with M&T Expo in the form of a license agreement with SOBRATEMA (Brazilian Association of Association of Technology for Construction and Mining).

  • Largest trade show in the world becomes even larger

One year before the opening of the world’s leading trade show bauma on 8th April 2019, Messe München provides an outlook on the latest developments: the site in the east of Munich will be expanded to 614,000 m2, the number of halls will be increased to 18. The organizer anticipates that more exhibitors will attend than at bauma 2016. The next edition of the world’s leading trade fair for construction machinery, building material machines, mining machines, construction vehicles and construction equipment will take place from 8th until 14th April 2019. Currently, the worldwide demand for exhibition space is extremely high.

A new hall and fairgrounds map facilitates the orientation on the gigantic site (Figure 1). Thanks to the clear division into the individual exhibition sectors, visitors can be managed in a more targeted way. With the two new halls that together cover 20,000 m2 bauma will provide space for more exhibitors than in 2016, when 3,425 exhibitors took part.

The most important changes at a glance: the largest sector construction machines and attachments is expanded from four to five halls as well as by an additional area outdoors, directly adjacent to the hall complex. The components sector now also has five instead of four halls; formworks and scaffolds moves to Hall B3; and lifting appliances are bundled in Hall C4. New in Hall C6 is the Conference Center North that houses additional conference rooms.

Previously located in Hall B0, which will be used as additional exhibition space during bauma 2019, the special THINK BIG! exhibit that shows students career opportunities in the construction and building material machine industries moves to the ICM – International Congress Center Munich. And there is another change that is envisaged: during the trade fair, the traffic-calmed part of Paul-Henri-Spaak-Straße will be turned into the pedestrian zone “bauma Boule-vard”, along which visitors and exhibitors can enjoy an international culinary offering.

  • bauma CONEXPO AFRICA: Investing in positive growth

The third edition of bauma CONEXPO AFRICA, the International Trade Fair for Construction Machinery, Building Material Machines, Mining Machines and Construction Vehicles, takes place from 13th to 16th March 2018 in Johannesburg/South Africa. Over 600 exhibitors will take up 68,000 m2 at the Johannesburg Expo Centre. Africa’s premier trade fair for the mining and construction industry will attract both local and international visitors, the top five African countries, after South Africa, among the visitors in 2015 were: Zambia, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Mozambique and Botswana.

According to Germany Trade & Invest (GTAI), Germany´s economic development agency, the building sector is currently one of the most important mainstays in the economy of South Africa. This positive trend is being driven by different processes. E. g., the continuing shift of population away from rural areas into the cities is increasing demand for construction of multi-story residential accommodation. The transport infrastructure is also poised for further expansion. According to GTAI, by 2020 around 334 bn rand (about 22.7 bn €) is set to flow into this sector.

Exhibitors at bauma CONEXPO AFRICA 2018 are seeing the shift in momentum. Quintin Booysen, Marketing and Sales Manager at PMSA – Pan Mixers South Africa – one of South Africa´s largest manufacturers of concrete brick, block and paving machinery, says: “Business in precast concrete components is starting to recover this year: The bigger manufacturers are expanding and replacing their machinery in order to enhance their competitiveness in the future and to secure themselves a larger market share.”

The recently ailing South African mining sector also seems to be turning a corner. The Chamber of Mines South Africa reported a 6 % improvement in performance in the sector in the first quarter of 2017 as compared to the same period in 2016. And there are further signs of positive growth. South Africa is the world´s largest producer of platinum, and experts are predicting that there will be a shortfall in supplies of this precious metal from about the year 2020. According to GTAI, some mine operators are already planning investments in order to profit from this development.

“In all segments of the construction machinery and mining sector, bauma CONEXPO AFRICA presents the latest “hardware” needed for business success,” says Elaine Crewe, CEO of the trade-fair organizer BC Expo South Africa. She continues: “To get an all-round picture of the machinery and systems on display, it is important for visitors to the trade fair to see the equipment in action. To meet this need we will have two demonstration areas at the 2018 event.” In her assessment, this further highlights the trade fair´s status as the most important sector event in Africa. • Record demand at bauma 2016

For seven days the city of Munich was taken over by the bauma trade fair, during which around 580,000 visitors from 200 countries came to the Messe München exhibition centre between 11th and 17th April
(Figure 1). This is an increase of more than 9 % in comparison with the last bauma in 2013.

The top ten visiting countries to Germany were Austria, Switzerland, Italy, France, the Netherlands, the UK, Sweden,
Russia, Poland and the Czech Republic. A total of 3,423 exhibitors – 1,263 German and 2,160 international companies – presented their latest products, developments and innovations on a record exhibition space of 605,000 m2. At 63 %, the proportion of international exhibitors has never been so high. Together with the energy agency NRW the international mining journal Mining Report Glückauf was presented at the common booth of the state of North
Rhine-Westphalia.

The mining sector enjoyed an extremely positive response at bauma, as Erwin Schneller, Managing Director at SBM Minerals, reports: “Bauma is very international. We had visitors from all over the world, from Chile to Canada, China to Russia, Africa to Norway. My personal highlight was the fact that we made unplanned sales directly at the event itself.” Furthermore, Anja Wiehoff, Communication Manager at Atlas Copco in Germany, confirms: “We are very pleased with how the exhibition has gone and the sales figures testify to the importance of bauma, on an international as well as national level. We have exceeded our goals. Bauma is continually developing and reinventing itself. All customers and target groups are represented here, on an international level too. This year saw very high attendance from Scandinavian customers. We also welcomed visitors from Benelux, Peru, Colombia, Turkey, India, Indonesia, the USA, Australia and Poland. For Atlas Copco it was an eventful and successful bauma 2016.”

All this clearly demonstrates that bauma is the platform of choice for companies looking to unveil their innovations to the world. John L. Garrison, CEO & President of Terex Corp., stresses: “Bauma allows us to meet customers from around the world every three years. As the largest of the industry events, it is a great opportunity to introduce new products and services.” Masatoshi Morishita, Managing Director & CEO at Komatsu Europe, sums it up as follows: “We make the most of the level of attention at bauma to present our innovations. It is a milestone for the sector. It is not only Komatsu that tries to ensure that particular machines are finished in time for bauma. This trade fair drives the entire sector.”

The next bauma trade fair will take place from 8th to 14th April 2019 in Munich. (bauma/Si.)
