  • Digital mobility in mining secures today’s lime extraction and tomorrow’s boiled egg

Washing, brushing teeth, applying lotion to the skin – everyday morning activities in many bathrooms. Thumbing through the daily newspaper at breakfast, a little sugar in the coffee or tea, enjoying a boiled egg for breakfast and sliding into a pair of leather boots before leaving the house. Taking a look at the car’s tires – sometime in the coming days, the winter tires should be put on. All of these things have something in common: They involve lime. Lime is as common as it is indispensable. We come across it thousands of times a day without even noticing it. The basic product limestone is mined at the Oetelshofen quarry in Wuppertal/Germany. Heavy machinery, excavators and dump trucks are used on a daily basis here. Precise schedules are crucial for a smooth mining process. If one of the machines fails due to tire damage, this will have expensive and sustainable consequences. To prevent this from happening, tire manufacturer Continental AG, Hanover/Germany, and Schlüter Baumaschinen GmbH are using digital tire management with Vodafone.

“Today’s mobility is connected and digital. It enables us to create greater safety and efficiency on the roads, on industrial sites and at many extraordinary workplaces such as the lime quarry in Oetelshofen. This requires fast networks that transmit data safely and quickly. Digital mobility is already part of everyday life at the Oetelshofen quarry. Together with Continental, we are creating the greatest possible safety for drivers and enabling an efficient and smooth process flow thanks to digital tire management,” explains Michael Reinartz, head of innovation at Vodafone Germany.

Another full excavator bucket and then the fully loaded 40 t dump truck moves at walking speed to haul away the mined stone. It is one of seven vehicles at the Oetelshofen lime quarry, where more than 1.3 M t/a of lime are mined. Long service life of the vehicles and low idle time in the event of damage are crucial in this environment controlled by giant machines. If a dump truck breaks down on the road due to a flat tire, the entire process flow in the quarry is disrupted and operations may come to a complete standstill. If one of the machines fails, this too costs time and money. Up to several tens of thousands of euros daily. This is why Schlüter Baumaschinen is using Continental’s digital tire management. It sends out early warning messages before tire damage could even occur, thereby offering the greatest possible safety for employees and machines as well as efficiency for process flows.

With the ContiConnect digital tire monitoring system, a sensor installed in the tires continuously monitors tire pressure and temperature (Figure 1). The data is sent every two minutes via mobile communications to selected recipients such as the driver and head office staff, as well as to a central web portal. This way, the driver always has an overview of the condition of the tires. In critical situations, ContiConnect automatically sends a warning message – to the display of the driver’s cab, to the web portal, or via text message and email to defined recipients. The tire data is securely protected and reliably sent to the Continental cloud using the Vodafone data card and from there to the ContiConnect web portal. This gives fleet managers in the quarry and service partners such as Schlüter an overview of the tires of the entire fleet at all times. Using digital tire management thus prevents expensive tire failures in heavy and large vehicles (dump trucks).

“Continental has continuously refined its digital tire monitoring system. Continental has been supplying its radial ply tires for heavy earth moving vehicles with digital sensors ex works since 2016. Today’s ContiConnect enables tire monitoring of vehicle fleets continuously and location-independent. This means that the tire pressure is constantly maintained at the correct level, thereby saving fuel. Thanks to continuous tire monitoring, the tires also have a longer service life. Tire maintenance work can be carried out proactively thus avoiding idle times,” says Reinhard Klant, expert in earth movement and product line manager at Continental Commercial Specialty Tires.

The fast and secure data transfer, even in remote places such as quarries and construction sites, secures lime extraction and makes digital tire management a pioneering system for raw material extraction.

  • Komatsu approves Continental EM-Master for Dash 8 Wheel Loader Series

The Japanese manufacturer of construction, mining, forestry and military equipment Komatsu recently approved the Continental EM-Master tires (Figure 1), both in E3/L3 and E4/L4 version for use in applications with different ground conditions. Starting January 2020, customers in Europe are able to select the Continental radial tires in the sizes 20.5 R25, 23.5 R25, 26.5 R25 or 29.5 R25 if they buy one of the Komatsu Dash 8 Wheel Loader Series (WA270-8, WA320-8, WA380-8, WA470-8, WA-480-8, WA500-8).

Continental’s EM-Master is tailored to the needs of construction sites and mining sites where articulated dump trucks, wheel loaders and dozers are used. The EM-Master E3/L3 has a normal tread depth and a larger distance between the tread blocks for good self-cleaning properties, traction and maneuverability even on soft and muddy ground. The open tread pattern design ensures better cooling properties and thus lower heat build-up, resulting in higher mileage.

Compared to the E3/L3, the EM-Master E4/L4 has a larger block size with a smaller gap between the blocks. The tire therefore offers high carcass protection and good cut resistance, reducing the risk of punctures and thus downtime. The smaller spacing of the tread blocks with the five-edged block design ensures smoother running and good traction even on hard and rocky surfaces. Due to its high tread wear volume, the EM-Master E4/L4 also offers a high mileage.

The EM-Master is equipped ex works with integrated tire sensors. The sensor continuously monitors pressure and temperature of the tire. With the help of the tire pressure monitoring systems ContiPressureCheck for individual vehicles and ContiConnect for vehicle fleets, the data can be monitored and displayed. This maximizes uptime, reduces downtime and increases operational efficiency. At the same time, the systems also increase vehicle safety.

  • Building blocks for the future: Continental reinforces focus on digital solutions for the construction business

In tough conditions such as mining and construction sites, efficiency and safety are key. However, underinflated tires are still a major cause of breakdowns and service calls. On average, one third of fleet tires are underinflated. This not only has an effect on fuel consumption but also on the tire life – with 10 % underinflation, tread life is reduced by 15 % and casing life by 20 %. With 20 % underinflation, casing life is reduced by up to 30 %. Hence, optimally used tires and better conserved carcasses can be used for retreading and thereby give the tire several lives. Verifying proper tire pressure and temperature thus maximizes uptime because the risk of breakdowns is reduced and scheduled maintenance no longer needed.

To ensure the correct tire pressure and temperature, Continental AG, Hanover/Germany, has developed its digital tire pressure monitoring systems ContiPressureCheck™ and ContiConnect™. With the help of tire sensors mounted on the inner liner of the tire, the systems monitor, analyse and report data about tire temperature and pressure, thus help optimizing fleet efficiency (Figure 1).

Continental tire sensors are at the core of both ContiPressureCheck and ContiConnect. The intelligent tire sensors constantly measure temperature and pressure from inside the tire and provide data to be displayed on the dashboard – whether this is on a handheld device, inside the driver’s cabin or on a web portal overseeing the fleet. The alerts and notifications in particular are designed to steer the fleet’s attention to immediate action needs.

For the new Conti CrossTrac truck tire line, customers can select from the main sizes for an intelligent tire, whereas all tires in the OTR ContiEarth portfolio come as intelligent tires with pre-installed tire sensors shipped straight from the factory.

The ContiPressureCheck system displays the tire sensor’s data in the driver’s cabin or on the handheld device and warns before a condition becomes critical. It is a complete, driver-focused solution for single vehicles and can also be integrated into third-party telematics solutions for 24/7 multiple vehicle monitoring. ContiPressureCheck has now been on the market successfully for five years and is available in 47 countries.

ContiConnect is Continental’s solution for monitoring tire pressure and temperature remotely, taking digital tire monitoring to the next level. The solution conveniently monitors multiple vehicles and helps fleet managers switch from inflexible manual service routines to targeted, real-time maintenance. Today, the solution mainly targets fleets that return to a yard or construction site on a regular basis.

Both ContiPressureCheck and ContiConnect have proven their value successfully. Construction customers such as BetonMastHæhre, the biggest road construction company in Norway, have shown a high level of satisfaction with both. They tested the solutions with the Continental EM-Master in a remote area in Northern Norway. After this test, BetonMastHæhre also purchased several new 40 t-ADTs with Conti-PressureCheck integrated on the display of the machines.

Another test customer from the USA, which is a hauler of cement powder and fly ash, reported a reduction of tire-related roadside service calls to zero in the whole eight months of using ContiConnect. CEMEX in the UK have seen a reduction of 43 % in out-of-hours call outs for tires, with the drivers identifying issues on route thanks to ContiPressureCheck. To prove its ability to withstand severe conditions such as extreme heat and speed, ContiPressureCheck has been tested, e. g., on the Russian KAMAZ-Master trucks during the Dakar Rally desert race.
