  • IBS and its innovative roadheaders at MINExpo 2016 Las Vegas

With more than 40 years of experience in the mining and tunnelling machinery business Industriemaschinen-Bergbau-Service GmbH (IBS), Bischofsheim/Germany, has developed a portfolio of products and services “Made in Germany” tailored to the needs of the industry. At MINExpo 2016 in Las Vegas IBS presented its innovative solutions such as iRoadheader and more in the German Pavilion.

IBS has an excellent reputation for its well-established range of compact roadheading machines from 28 to 45 t suitable for galleries from 10 to 25 m2 (Figure 1). In recent years these have been developed further to include state-of-the-art control and monitoring systems as well as a wide range of enhancements to improve safety and performance under the most arduous conditions. To meet the growing demand for improved safety, better working conditions and greater performance, IBS has become a “one-stop shop” for customers looking for package solutions. The typical heading face is fraught with risks such as gas or rock bursts, gas explosions, rock falls, dust, heat & humidity and space restraints.

Together with strategic partners IBS has developed its Inmine/iRoadheader package of solutions with teleremote operator assistance enabling driverless operation of the machine from at least 250 m away from the face in a safe, clean and comfortable environment. The heart of the package is a radar-based 3D profile control and navigation system developed in joint venture with Indurad GmbH – the industrial radar specialists from Aachen/Germany. Several such packages are already in operation. Four such systems were further enhanced with gas drilling, roofbolting, muck haulage, remote data storage and transmission, condition monitoring, ventilation and dust filtration to form a complete “Outburst Management Package” (OMP) to protect the operators from the considerable risk of gas outbursts. All the equipment was compliant with the ATEX directive. All the iRoadheader packages are available as retrofits both on IBS equipment and on third party machines – new or used. “iRoadheader is already in operation on a number of machines and has also already proven its reliability in an outburst situation”, says Bruce Field, Sales Director of IBS.

When it comes to getting the best out of the equipment, IBS offers after sales service including qualified technical support, long time availability of spare parts and components, field service, planned maintenance as well as repairs and overhauls. IBS has a proven track record for high quality service. With many years of experience, extensive in-house fabrication and machining facilities as well as experienced and competent personnel, IBS is in a uni-que position of being able to offer such services both for its own equipment and third party machines.

  • Mining 4.0: Groundbraking technology for the control of roadheaders improves both safety and productivity underground

Specialist engineers at IBS Industriemaschi-nen-Bergbau-Service GmbH, Bischofs-heim/Germany, have been developing quality roadheaders “Made in Germany” for the mining and tunnelling industries for some 20 years. IBS is part of the Schmitt Werke group of companies. At this year‘s bauma, IBS will be presenting two new and innovative product lines: the iRoadheader by INMINE for the teleremote control of roadheaders from a safe distance and Starter RS2.0 – a smart, state-of-the-art switchgear.

The development face in underground coal mining can be a dangerous and uncomfortable place of work – risks to the miners include gas explosions, gas and rock outbursts, dust, heat, humidity or any combination thereof. IBS, together with the newly founded joint venture company INMINE GmbH, will present and demonstrate the iRoadheader, an innovative teleremote operator assistance and profile control system enabling the machine to be operated safely from 200 m away or more (Figure 1). When equipped with this system there is no longer any need for personnel to be present in the danger zone at the face thereby drastically reducing the risk to their well-being. The system can be fitted to any suitable roadheader or similar development machine and/or retrofitted to existing equipment.

The iRoadheader utilizes remote controls, high-tech radar positioning, HD camera supervision, audio feedback, smart PLC/computer software and robust hardware to provide high quality imaging and data for an “at the face” feeling for the remote operator. The radar positioning systems enable precise negotiation of vertical and horizontal changes in gradient and the excavation of 90° junctions or cross-cuts. An additional benefit is more accurate cutter head guidance and profile control minimising unnecessary overcut. All the components are of extremely robust high quality “Made in Germany” design and also available in full compliance with the ATEX directive for use in underground coal mines. As Dr. René Nitsche, MD of IBS and INMINE says the iRoadheader is already in operation and well-tried on a number of machines. Visitors to the IBS booth can see and try the iRoadheader for themselves on a simulator. The complete system has been developed in cooperation with indurad GmbH, Aachen/Germany, a market leader in high-tech industrial radar solutions. The system is being marketed by INMINE GmbH, a joint venture company co-owned by the two partners.

The second highlight on the IBS booth is the smart switchgear cabinet Roadheader Starter RS2.0 (Figure 2). Fully compliant with the ATEX directive the switchgear cabinet includes many new hardware and software features not yet seen in underground coal mining. This technology with its wide range of functions leads to considerably improved safety, a greater degree of efficiency and much enhanced reliability. A 15” full colour interactive display panel enable the user to access vital status information via menu navigation with the aid of 3D graphics. The system also enables self-explanatory troubleshooting and comes with on-board condition monitoring as standard. An early warning system has been included to prevent avoidable failures and consequential damage to other components. As a result, the life-expectancy of key components such as electric motors is increased considerably. As standard the package includes the hardware for remote control as well as the solenoid valve blocks for the hydraulic system. Fault indicators and status information are not only displayed on the panel but can also be stored on an SD card for later analysis using standard PC office software. The whole system is capable of withstanding relatively high voltage fluctuations which are common in underground operations.

With the aid of an optional client server it’s possible to integrate the RS2.0 into a network and provide permanent remote access, real time data transmission, monitoring, diagnostics, etc. All relevant information can be made available on PC’s or smartphones anywhere on or connected to the network. A remote maintenance module provides enables quick and accurate diagnostics as if the service technician was at the machine. As standard, RS2.0 can be connected using standard intrinsically safe DSL (phone cable) technology. Alternatively, intrinsically safe fibre optic technology is available.

  • Rapid and Safe Mine Development

On 13th march 2015 IBS, an engineering company located in Bischofsheim in the Rhön region of Germany, presented its newly developed roadheading system Type SM 150 to customers from all over the world. Together with their strategic partners, the IBS-team demonstrated the newly developed roadheader SM 150 with OMP (Outburst Management Package) by way of a live simulation of the underground conditions. The package is the first of its kind in the world enabling the roadheader to be operated accurately and safely from a distance of 200 m behind the face. This is critical in operations where there is a significant risk of gas outbursts or other dangers to the safety of the personnel. This is achieved by the utilisation of video, audio, radar-based profile control, 3D graphic imaging in combination with radio and cable remote control systems.

Some 70 guests from Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Russia, Italy, Turkey, Mexico, Cuba, Spain, UK, Ukraine and Kazakhstan had a view on the live demonstration of the complete system in a simulated gallery. This package is one of four currently being delivered to the “Mimosa VII” mine of Minera del Norte (“Minosa”) in Mexico. This mine has encountered a number of severe gas outbursts in the past with fatalities. This motivated Minosa to engage with IBS to develop a safer system of working to save lives and thus guarantee the future of the mine.

An analysis of the working conditions by the end user and specialist consultants resulted in the development of a package of hardware above and beyond the roadheader itself to meet the customer needs. As the main supplier, IBS was requested to select strategic partners to create that package which comprises four main elements:

    • the IBS roadheader SM 150 itself with roofbolter,
    • the new radar-based „Tele-remote Operator Assistance System“ which was developed by IBS together with the company indurad,
    • a multi-purpose adapter and manipulator from the company Neuhäuser with Sigma travelling system to enable degasification drilling and roofbolting from the roadheader,
    • an extendable bridge belt from the company Sigma,
    • a dry dust extraction and filtration system from the company CFT.

The SM 150 roadheader, the tele-remote control system and the multi-purpose adapter and manipulator have all been newly designed for this package. The bridge conveyor and ventilation and dust filtration systems have been adapted to suit the specific needs. The optimized system can be applied under a variety of risky conditions – gas, heat, poor visibility – and in various other applications such as salt or potash mining, civil engineering tunneling, etc.
