  • Central Europe gets its first two Metso Truck Bodies into operation

Exactly one year after the launch of the Metso Truck Body at the BAUMA 2019 fair, the first two Komatsu HD605-8 dump trucks equipped with Metso Truck Bodies have been delivered to a porphyry quarry in Brabant Wallon/Belgium, by Metso distributor BIA Group (Figure 1). These are the first Metso Truck Bodies taken into operation in Central Europe and a world premiere for rigid dumpers in this weight class.

The tough and abrasive rock handled by the quarry had a significant impact on the previous conventional truck boxes. On a traditional box, the maximum payload is limited by the high weight of the lining and the box itself. The Metso Truck Body differs from a standard box by its lighter, but resistant, rounded shaped design in ultra high-strength steel combined with the Trellex™ rubber lining. This makes it possible to obtain a 20 to 30 % lighter body without sacrificing rigidity.

The Metso Truck Body designed for the Komatsu HD605-8 truck weighs 6 t less than a standard version fitted with a steel liner. This weight reduction translates into a 10 % additional payload and therefore offers greater efficiency from the first run. Likewise, during empty bucket journeys, the dumper will consume less fuel simply because it is lighter. Due to its rounded shape, less carry-back remains in the body, avoiding transporting unnecessary weight.

  • Terratec Basalt adds plant economy with Germany’s first Lokotrack LT220D

An old quarry can always look for ways to enhance its production methods. The German quarry Terratec Basalt GmbH, is looking for savings in production by changing its processing method from stationary to mobile. Metso’s new Lokotrack LT220D “two-in-one” plant (Figure 1) helps the company to achieve the targeted goals.

“We estimate to get 25 to 30 % savings resulting in 1,0 to 1,5 €/t less costs by changing our quarry gradually from stationary to mobile. This is really providing significant savings for us,” comments Karl-Werner Bierbrauer, Managing director and owner of Terratec Basalt GmbH. “Our savings are based on cutting half the transportation of blasted rock to processing. Instead of bringing rocks to top-on-the-hill old stationary plant, we only need to transport the materials to the nearby Lokotrack mobile process,” he adds.

Started in 1962, A. Caspar Basaltwerk in Ettringen, a Bavarian city wets from Munich, has been known for its high-quality aggregates, produced of basalt and volcanic lava. The family company was bought early 2017 by Terratec Basalt.

Today, Bierbrauer & Sohn GmbH is known of their biggest, single Lokotrack fleet in Germany. The company leases today a fleet of twelve Lokotracks.

The mobile process now already started, will include three track-mounted units from Metso Inc., Tampere/Finland, a Lokotrack LT106 jaw plant, ST2.4. mobile screen and a LT220D cone plant with a screen. The LT220D is the first one being used in Germany.

Blasted basalt and lava is fed first to the LT106 primary jaw plant, which feeds the materials to ST2.4 screen. The screen separates 80 to 120 mm oversized from 0 to 80 mm sizes that are taken to LT220D cone-screen plant. The main end products from LT220D are 0 to 2 mm, 3 to 8 mm and 8 to 16 mm.

The end products are used in various applications in the region, e. g. street works, isolation and base materials in construction sites.

Terratec Basalt will lower the present 300,000 t/a production in the future down to some 150,000 t. The hourly capacity with the mobile Lokotrack process will be 150 to 250 t.

  • Metso delivered the 500th Lokotrack sold to Germany for Andres Erdarbeiten GmbH at Steinexpo

Metso Corp., Helsinki/Finland, reached another significant milestone in Lokotrack sales by delivering the 500th unit sold to Germany at Steinexpo, the biggest quarry exhibition in Europe. The LT120 jaw plant was received by Andres Erdarbeiten GmbH, a family-owned crushing, screening and recycling contractor (Figure 1). Globally, Metso has sold over 7,000 Lokotracks.

“Metso’s German customers were interested in the mobile, track-mounted Lokotrack crushing plant concept right away after the commercial production started in the Tampere works in 1985. In Germany, customers noticed quickly that the track-mounted units are more economical while the crusher could be moved to the rocks,” comments the sales success Hugo van Benthem, Metso’s Distribution manager in Germany.

The first Lokotrack deliveries to Germany in late 1980’s included often two-stage plants for crushing and screening in hard rock quarries. A typical combination was a tracked LT100 jaw and LT1100 cone plant. The German company ABAG purchased these units over 30 years ago, and are still running the same crushers, which proves something of the longevity of the Lokotrack range.

“Today, Metso’s Lokotracks used in Germany cover well all customer segments, from light, easy-to-transport contracting and recycling plants to sturdy, high-capacity mobile quarrying crushers. Our German customers like also Metso’s in-the-pit primary crushing concept with jaw plant connected to a mobile conveyor system,” explains Joachim Höft, Sales manager of Metso Germany GmbH.
