  • Pump manufacturer Pleuger on expansion course with Build-to-Order strategy

Pleuger Industries GmbH, the Hamburg-based quality manufacturer of submersible motor pumps, exhibited in the Germany Pavilion of Asia Pacific’s International Mining Exhibition 2019 (AIMEX) in Australia. In addition to the latest applications in the fields of mine drainage and process water pumping, the Pleuger management presented an energy-efficient synchronous motor with permanent magnet drive, which scores with low life cycle costs in particular (Figure 7).

At this year’s AIMEX, Pleuger’s energy-efficient permanent magnet motor, which was also created by Hamburg engineers for pumping applications in the mining industry, should attract attention. The synchronous motor with permanent magnet rotor has up to 14 % higher efficiency compared to conventional induction motors. Since 90 % of a submersible motor pump’s life-cycle costs are attributable to power consumption, the latest technology provides enormous power saving potential. The hermetically sealed rotor is also protected against corrosion and mechanical influences and contributes to maintenance-free operation.

Innovations like these are based on Pleuger engineers‘ decades of project experience. At the production site in Hamburg, the R&D department creates tailor-made unique alternatives for mining companies around the world. These include iron ore mines in Western Australia, copper mines in Chile, uranium mines in Niger and opencast lignite mining in Germany.

Pleuger is able to guarantee its clients the suitable after-sales service with a dense network of sales partners and expand its built-to-order strategy worldwide. The company’s global expansion course was strongly promoted by the US-American company Flacks Group’s acquisition. Most recently, Pleuger established sales offices in Moscow and Miami and has invested in additional local service personnel.

Pleuger’s machine manufacturer’s range includes standard and special units from 4 to 50″, depending on the customer’s requirements. Pressure jacket pumps that do not require dynamic seals and are therefore considered particularly reliable are used to increase the pressure in pipelines.

  • Pleuger Industries supplies process water pumps to Chile’s leading copper mine

The Chilean Collahuasi Mine in the Pica district of the Tarapacå region produces more than 5,000 t/a of fine copper, making it one of the largest copper mines in the world. Two opencast mines, Rosario and Ujina, provide the necessary copper ores, which are smelted on site into copper concentrate and cathodes. Destination: Far East and the Chilean copper industry. For enrichment, the mine relies on the flotation process, for which the German motor pump manufacturer Pleuger Industries GmbH, Hamburg, now supplies six robust high-performance pumps.

The acceptance of the six hand-made aggregates, to which the technical management of the mine together with the pump distributor Wellford had travelled from Chile to Hamburg, took a week (Figure 1). This is not unusual when one considers the significance of the new submersible motor pumps for the processing of copper sulphide: The 10-inch pumps are used to dewater the copper sludge in the flotation process and extract the copper concentrate. If the pumps fail, the production process comes to a standstill until the pumps are repaired. Reliability therefore has top priority. The decision in favour of a pump manufacturer is therefore less a question of one-time costs than of confidence in the technical know-how of the engineers. The company Wellford from Chile, Collahuasis pump supplier, brought Pleuger Industries into play because the German pump manufacturer has decades of experience in designing pump units for the special requirements of the mining sector. Pleuger’s engineers have acquired their expertise in various customizing projects around the globe, which the company continuously uses in the construction of its engines.

Process pumps used in copper production operate under extreme conditions. Copper, a semi-precious metal dissolved in water, quickly oxidizes the materials from which pumps are usually made. In order to counteract this process, the engineers at Pleuger Industries rely on a corrosion protection concept specially adapted to the customer when designing the pumps. In addition, the new pump systems must be energy-efficient, because Collahuasis copper production follows an energy management system based on international standards.

  • Submersible motor pump specialist Pleuger Industries is back

After 18 years in the Flowserve group, Pleuger Industries, the German manufacturer of submersible motor pumps, is once again represented on the market as an independent company. An American investor bought the brand and transferred the strategic management to German hands. From its headquarters and production site in Hamburg, Pleuger Industries now supplies its customers with submersible motor pumps, plunger pumps and thrusters “Made in Germany”. More than 200 experienced employees passionately strive for worldwide company growth after the change of ownership.

From 2000 to 2018, Pleuger was part of the Texas based machine engineering company Flowserve and was responsible for the motor pump division within the corporation. The Flacks Group, a private investment group from the USA, bought Pleuger out of Flowserve in 2018. The strategic management of the long-established German company has now returned to its attractive headquarters in the heart of Hamburg’s Wandsbek district (Figure 1).

With a new brand appearance and the claim “Power – Pumps – Propulsion” the pump specialist underlines its strengths as the inventor and manufacturer of submersible motor pumps. In its 90-year history, Pleuger has become a synonym for the underwater motor pump and is still regarded today as a German promise of highest quality. This competence is based on the experience of Pleuger’s engineers, who have continuously improved the water-filled motor in Germany since it was patented in 1929. Pleuger pumps are globally used in the water industry, on offshore drilling platforms, in refineries, nuclear power plants and in mines. Today, Pleuger’s submersible motor pump division comprises a broad portfolio of cavern, well, booster, polder and flood pump units. In addition to Pleuger’s submersible pumps, vertical and horizontal plunger pumps “Made in Germany” have become an integral part of the world’s fluid industries. Often these are tailor-made machines designed specifically for the application, which are characterised by high operational reliability and freedom from maintenance.

In addition to the previous Pleuger locations in Orléans/France, and Hamburg/Germany, further locations in the USA and Russia will be added shortly. From there, Pleuger intends to build up its portfolio in the oil and gas markets of the regions and develop additional market shares in the water market, in general industry and in the energy sector.

Frank-Ulrich Szittke, General Manager of Pleuger, sees the basis for a successful business development secured: “With our customized solutions for special applications in mining, petrochemicals, the energy industry and the water market, we see great market opportunities and considerable growth potential. As we have a worldwide network of distributors and service contractors, we are able to supply our customers around the globe and offer the corresponding support. In addition, we will continue to focus on the standard pump business, further develop the product range and offer the corresponding support,” emphasizes Szittke.

Since the beginning of the year, Pleuger has presented itself with an independent brand identity that revives the corporate philosophy. On the new website, customers can get an impression of Pleuger’s activities.
