SIEMAG TECBERG

  • Start of installation of SIEMAG TECBERG hoisting technology in the Sishanling iron ore mine in Benxi/China

In early 2017 Tianjin SIEMAG TECBERG Machinery Co., Ltd., the subsidiary of SIEMAG TECBERG GmbH headquartered in Haiger, Germany, and Benxi Longxin Mining Co., Ltd. , a company forming part of the Jianlong Group China, signed a supply agreement for three sets of hoisting & conveying systems to be divided between two shafts in the Sishanling iron ore mine near the city of Benxi in the Province of Liaoning in China (Figure 1).

    The customer

The Sishanling iron ore mine operated by the Benxi Longxin Mining Co., Ltd. (Jianlong Group) is one of the largest iron ore mines currently being opened up in China. The Jianlong Group integrates new industries in the field of raw materials, steel, shipbuilding and electromechanics. In 2020 crude steel production in the group stood at about 37 Mt/a, so putting the company in eighth place amongst the world’s steel-producing companies.

    Ore deposits

The Sishanling iron ore mine has 2.5 billion tonnes of proven iron ore reserves with an average iron content of about 31 %. Because of the concentrated ore body and its even distribution these reserves are suitable for extraction on a large scale. They are the largest proven and registered iron ore deposits in China, having

a long-term planned extraction capacity of 30 Mt/a. Initially 15 Mt will be achieved a year in the next five years. In 2016 the project was included in the Ministry of Science and Technology’s „13th Five-Year Plan“ and declared a demonstration mine for research and application of theory and technology for the exploitation of underground resources.

    Development of the project

After the customer and the design institute initially planned a total of three production shafts to be able to extract a total of 15 Mt/a at the first stage, after intense consultation with SIEMAG TECBERG the concept was optimised to two shafts each yielding 7.5 Mt/a. A service shaft equipped with a total of two service winders for the transport of personnel and machinery will also be sunk.

The overall concept thus initially provides for a total of three hoisting systems: a double-skip production system in the production shaft in the form of a 6.75 m 6-rope machine and a cage counterweight system for personnel and machine transport in the form of a 6 m 6-rope machine and a smaller cage counterweight system for emergencies in the form of a 4 m 4-rope machine in the service shaft. Early in 2017 orders for these systems were awarded in a public bidding procedure in which Tianjin SIEMAG TECBERG won out against international and local competitors for the supply of all three hoisting systems, not least because of the company’s capacity for system integration of very large, deep and complex shaft hoisting systems.

    Scope of SIEMAG TECBERG’s delivery

The current agreement requires SIEMAG TECBERG to undertake the engineering, production, delivery and supervision of the installation and initial start-up of the following equipment:

Shaft hoisting systems for raw material extraction (production shaft)

System 1. Double-skip hoisting system. Tower-based 6-rope Koepe hoisting machine, dia. 6.75 m, for skip hoisting (55 t payload per hoisting skip) at a depth of 1,500 m with an overall drive output of 16 MW (2 x 8 MW), which is designed for a hoisting performance of 7.5 Mt/a. Split plain bearings with bearing lubrication, 1 set 6-rope rope sheaves for rope deflection, an ST3-F (closed loop technology) hydraulic braking system with 12 pairs of BE 250 brake elements, 4 sets SM150 DC indirect converters (IGCT), automation equipment including machine control system, energy distribution system and a shaft signalling and loading and unloading control system complete this hoisting system package.

Shaft hoisting systems for personnel and equipment (service shaft)

System 2. Large-cage hoisting system. Ground-based 6-rope Koepe hoisting machine, dia. 6 m, for large-cage hoisting with a drive output of 3 MW (2 x 8 MW). Rolling bearings, 2 sets 6-rope rope sheaves for rope deflection, an ST3-F (closed loop technology) hydraulic braking system with 14 pairs of BE125 brake elements, 2 sets SM150 indirect converters (IGBT), automation equipment including machine control system, energy distribution system and a shaft signalling and loading and unloading control system complete this hoisting system package.

System 3. Cage hoisting system. Ground-based 4-rope Koepe hoisting machine, dia. 4.5 m, for cage hoisting with a drive output of 1 MW. 2 sets 4-rope rope sheaves for rope deflection, an ST3-F (closed loop technology) hydraulic braking system with 6 pairs of BE125 brake elements, 1 set SM150 indirect converters (IGBT) and automation equipment including machine control system complete this hoisting system package.

The special feature of the three hoisting systems is the central control system. The control room is located in the hall of the hoisting machine of the service shaft. In normal operation the hoisting systems in the production and service shaft are all in automatic lifting operation. Furthermore, the two systems in the service shaft are fitted with wireless communication devices that enable the hoisting equipment to be controlled from the cage direct. This enables personnel to reach different levels direct.

Early in 2022 SIEMAG TECBERG started on the installation of the equipment on site in Benxi (Figure 2).

    Planned expansion of production

The operator Benxi Longxin has meanwhile begun with preparations for production shaft no. 2 in order to achieve the expansion level of 2 x 7.5 Mt/a in the medium term. SIEMAG TECBERG is supporting the customer intensively with planning and because of the initial order has a very good chance of being successful with this bid too.

  • SIEMAG TECBERG supplies shaft hoisting equipment to EuroChem-Usolskiy Potash Complex

In July and August 2021 SIEMAG TECBERG GmbH, Haiger/Germany, and LLC EuroChem-Usolskiy Potash Complex signed agreements for the delivery of shaft hoisting systems. LLC EuroChem-Usolskiy Potash Complex is part of EuroChem Group AG, a major Russian company group based in Zug/Switzerland, that specialises in the production of fertilizers and operates its own mining sites and further-processing systems for phosphates and nitrates. The EuroChem Group employs more than 27,000 people.

Situated in the region of Perm close to Russia‘s traditional potash production sites is Verkhnekamskoe one of the world‘s largest potash deposits. Potassium chloride (KCl) is the potassium salt of muriatic acid and forms colourless, salty-bitter-tasting, water-soluble crystals. It is used in large-scale technology for the manufacture of potash fertilizers and in food technology as a firming agent and flavour enhancer. KCI is used as an active agent in medicines, mainly to remedy potassium deficiency. The salt is also contained as an additive in numerous medicines, e. g., in isotonic solutions administered as infusions.

One expansion phase of the Usolskiy complex (Figure 9) includes the already begun new-construction of a third production shaft (Usolskiy Shaft No. 3) with a depth of 511.7 m as well as a further treatment system. The present agreement requires SIEMAG TECBERG to undertake the engineering, production, delivery, supervison of assembly and commissioning of the following equipment:

  • SIEMAG TECBERG to win its first contract for shaft-hoisting systems in Kazakhstan

In December 2020, SIEMAG TECBERG Group, Haiger/Germany, and TNC Kazchrome JSC signed a contract for the delivery of shaft hoisting systems.

Kazchrome is a fully integrated mining and metallurgical company in Kazakhstan covering all stages of the value chain, i. e. from geological exploration to underground mining and the extraction of raw materials to the production of metallic products. Kazchrome is owned by the Eurasian Resources Group (ERG) based in Luxembourg. With “Donskoy GOK”, the Group is pursuing a large and ambitious shaft construction project to increase the chrome ore mining production by 10 M t from the current level of approximately 5.6 M t to almost three times this amount. This ore, high in chromium oxide content (up to 62 % Cr2O3), is used for the metallurgical production of ferroalloys as well as refractory products and chromium compounds in the chemical industry.

The existing Donskoy Ore Mining and Processing Plant (DGOK) complex was established already in 1938 in the town of Khromtau in the Aktobe region of mid-western Kazakhstan, approximately 700 km from the Caspian Sea. According to the company, the volume of confirmed chrome ore reserves is the second largest in the world and the quality of the chrome ore meets the highest quality standards. The DGOK employs a total of 7,500 people.

The current contract requires SIEMAG TECBERG (Figure 1) to engineer, produce, deliver, install and commission the following equipment:

    • two four rope Koepe hoisting machines (slide bearings) in tower arrangement, each with an electric drive power of 5.3 MW for a maximum annual output of 9.75 M t, including hydraulic braking systems and automation and signalling technology, designed in part to meet the very high international safety requirements of the SIL standard (Safety Integrity Level);
    • eight deflection sheaves to regulate a controlled rope run;
    • special equipment, accessories, spare parts.

Both hoisting machines are designed as a skip/skip system for a considerable shaft depth of 1,487 m.

The design of the main shafts together with the plain bearings ensures a largely wear-free operation and the greatest possible availability of the two hoisting machines – both key arguments in favour of SIEMAG TECBERG. The design based on the SIL standard offers the operator and his employees a very high level of safety, which is also a very important criterion in the selection of suppliers.

For SIEMAG TECBERG this first order for a new customer from Kazakhstan once again confirms the company’s performance promise. Together with the TECBERG ROSENSTEIN subsidiary, which was founded in 2020 and focuses specifically on the CIS states, the company has recently been able to further impress customers with its special and comprehensive logistics and certification competence for the CIS. This allows the customer during the delivery and certification project phase to transfer and register the equipment to his plant inventory as quickly and smoothly as possible under official supervision.

At the recently expanded TECBERG park, the customer can also count on an efficient assembly and a final on-site commissioning at his mine, thanks to a complete assembly of the complete equipment at the factory that includes extensive system tests of the drive technology on drive-train test benches and a pre-commissioning with all the pre-adjustments.

There is yet another reason why SIEMAG TECBERG considers the order from Kazakhstan to be very significant. “In the present global investment crisis caused by the Corona pandemic, we consider this order from Kazchrome to be an explicit acknowledgement of our heavy machinery designed, assembled and pretested in Germany, which has once again prevailed against global competitors and especially against emerging manufacturers from China and Russia. The respective governments of those important primary producing countries exercise massive influence to localise the technology production for their own construction of industrial plants. The continuous development of product innovations combined with the system integration of mechanics, hydraulics, automation, drive and signalling technology under the same roof is the unique selling point of SIEMAG TECBERG and this has led to the leading market position,” says JĂŒrgen Peschke, Managing Partner of the SIEMAG TECBERG Group.

  • The Most Advanced Shaft-Hoisting System

Yitai Group recently awarded SIEMAG TECBERG with an order in the double-digit million euro range to install four shaft hoisting machines at the company’s new coal mine in Inner Mongolia, known as the Hongqinghe project. The project marks a new cooperation between SIEMAG TECBERG and Yitai Group as a worldwide flagship project. Two of the four machines are skip winders, each with integrated 9000 kW motors.

These mine winders are the biggest ever supplied by SIEMAG TECBERG, and are the largest in the world to feature a motor integrated in the drum. The compact design will help Yitai Group to reduce investment costs associated with the new colliery. What’s more, the carbon footprint of the integrated machines with double winding at full load but only at half speed – is smaller than that of a conventionally designed plant.
