  • SKF signs maintenance contract with the Antamina copper mine in Peru

SKF GmbH, Schweinfurt/Germany, has secured a three-year contract with Compañia Minera Antamina S.A. (Antamina), to provide Proactive Reliability Maintenance services at the company’s open-pit copper mine in Peru. Antamina is jointly owned by BHP Billiton, Glencore, Teck and Mitsubishi Corporation, who have jointly invested over 3.5 bn US$ in the site, making it one of the largest mining investments in Peru’s history.

John Schmidt, President Industrial Sales Americas, said that for mine operators, many of which are located in remote areas, critical equipment failure could be very costly. By applying SKF´s knowledge within the fields of tribology, vibrational analysis and thermography, Antamina could reduce the risk of reoccurring failures, contributing to improve machine efficiency.

SKF’s Proactive Reliability Maintenance services will apply best practice predictive maintenance activities, including non-destructive testing of critical mining and plant equipment, to diagnose the root causes of failures at the Antamina mine (Figure 8). Together with Antamina’s own maintenance teams, SKF will then take the necessary steps to help eliminate reoccurrences by, e. g., adjusting lubrication use, shaft alignment and seals or bearing selection.

  • Providing lubrication solutions for one of world’s largest copper mines

SKF has secured a contract with the Las Bambas mine in Peru (Figure 1) to provide lubrication management services for all electric motors in the mine’s concentrator plant. Engineered specifically for Las Bambas, the lubrication solutions will contribute to increased equipment reliability and cost effectiveness.

The two-year agreement with Las Bambas includes engineering, planning and scheduling, execution and management of all lubrication-related activities for the electric motors. In addition, SKF will supply lubrication system components and tools to the mine.

The SKF Three-Barrier Solution, consisting of sealed SKF Explorer spherical roller bearings, housings and SKF Taconite Seals, also has been deployed for the mine’s overland conveyor belts, with shafts measuring between 500 and 700 mm. The bearings and housings provided will have integrated sensor positions for condition monitoring that offer the improved contamination protection needed in severe weather conditions.

Forecast to produce approximately 400,000 t of copper once fully operational in 2017, Las Bambas will be the third largest copper mine in the world.
