Glückauf! 4/2022

This latest issue of Mining Report Glückauf seeks to focus mainly on “Teaching and Research in Mining”. As well as giving an overview of the kind of role that mining universities are still being to play, we are taking a look at what currently motivates our home-based mining schools and colleges. We also present an example of the traineeship training at the mining authority in North-Rhine Westphalia.

Even in the very early years of industrialisation in Germany those who were bound for top managerial jobs in the mining industry were given … Read more

Intelligent Search Engine Makes Expert Knowledge Usable

Structure of the search software amberSearch. Source: ambeRoad

Hard coal mining in Germany is history, but the expert knowledge from 150 years should remain. But how can information that is hidden in millions of documents on numerous servers be made efficiently usable? To solve this problem, RAG Aktiengesellschaft, Essen/Germany, relies on technical innovation and artificial intelligence (AI), which unlocks valuable knowledge for employees and makes it easily accessible. The company is receiving support from the Aachen-based start-up ambeRoad Tech GmbH, which is to take the company-wide search engine to the next level.

Mine water rebound including mine water management and water treatment are key perpetual tasks for the operating mine company RAG Aktiengesellschaft, Essen/Germany, and associated foundation RAG-Stiftung, Essen/Germany, since hard coal mining in the Ruhr District ceased at the end of 2018. The scientific support of the mine water rebound process includes a robust risk management and associated hydrogeochemical monitoring to verify containment and conformance of mine water during the entire rebound process. Hydrogeochemical monitoring of mine waters becomes increasingly important in the view of …

Special Qualification-Courses for Technicians

Graduates of the Fachschule für Wirtschaft und Technik (FWT) in Clausthal-Zellerfeld have a wide range of career chances in technical jobs or middle management. Source: FWT

Each summer when the vacations/holidays come to an end, the Fachschule für Wirtschaft und Technik (FWT) in Clausthal-Zellerfeld/Germany, offers new courses in which students can attain the qualification of a “State Certified Technician”. These courses can serve as a stepping-stone towards interesting and demanding jobs especially for those who are ambitious to face tasks with higher responsibility – and higher pay, of course. The small university town of Freiberg offers even more educational opportunities in the geo-montane sector. The Vocational School Centre (BSZ), Freiberg/Germany, named after Freiberg’s famous scientist Julius Weisbach, bundles non-university education in Freiberg. With the newly installed technical school training to become a mining technician, it is now possible to pursue a complete professional career as a miner in Freiberg in addition to an academic one. In the following, the geo-montane training at the Vocational School and the Technical College, both under the umbrella of the BSZ Julius Weisbach Freiberg, will be presented.

Traineeship at the Mining Authority of North-Rhine Westphalia: More than just Mining … Mineral Resource Supply, Post-Mining, Future of Energy

Examples of the mining authority’s different areas of responsibility. Photos: Bezirksregierung Arnsberg

Are studies in the fields of mineral resource and energy supply worth the effort? Is there even still any mining in North-Rhine Westphalia? What are the mining authority’s tasks if hard coal is no longer won? These are questions many young people, especially future students who are interested in studies in mining and energy, are asking themselves. The answer, according to the experience of young leaders in the mining authority of North-Rhine Westphalia, is: “Yes, a career in this industry is worth it and qualified trainees are urgently needed.” A course of studies in the sector of mineral resource supply is not only promising, but it can also grant …

Corona Pandemic and Teaching in Mining

Demonstration example for inserting text/graphics into a running PowerPoint presentation from the home office. Photo: Weyer

With the beginning of the corona pandemic, contacts were restricted and events were banned. The teaching had to adapt. Online lectures replaced face-to-face events. The Institute for Mining and Special Civil Engineering at TU Bergakademie Freiberg, Freiberg/Germany, was able to implement corresponding courses immediately and also found regulations for internships and excursions.

The German Lignite Industry in 2021

The role of lignite in Germany’s energy economy 2021 (provisional, deviations in the totals due to rounding); position: March 2022. Source: AG Energiebilanzen und BDEW

Germany’s domestic lignite output increased by 18.9 Mt, which equals 17.6 %, from 107.4 Mt to 126.3 Mt between 2020 and 2021. The lignite extracted in 2021 had a net calorific value of 39.3 Mtce. Of that output 111.5 Mt, or about 88.3 %, were used in utility power plants supplying the general public. This translates into an increase of 19.8 % compared to the previous year. The sharp increase in power generation from lignite was primarily due to the marked increase in the consumption of electric power, the substantially reduced input of electric power from wind power as well as the drastic increases in the natural gas prices. The last item has led to a shift …
