ATEX-certified cases enable consumer tablets in underground mining environments

Xshielder, a Norwegian company, has developed ATEX and
IECEx certified protective cases that enable standard consumer tablets
and smartphones to operate safely in Zone 1/21 and Zone 2/22
classified hazardous areas, including underground mining environments
with explosive gas or dust atmospheres.
For mining operations, this means field personnel can use familiar
devices such as iPads and Samsung Galaxy tablets for geological
mapping, ventilation monitoring, inspection documentation, and digital
work orders in classified areas — without the high cost and limited
software ecosystem of dedicated explosion-proof tablets.
Key specifications:
– ATEX and IECEx Zone 1/21 certified
– Gas group IIC (hydrogen), Temperature class T4
– Dust protection Group IIIC
– IP68 rated enclosure
– Glove and wet-screen compatible
– Compatible with current-generation consumer tablets and smartphones
The approach certifies the protective enclosure rather than the device
itself, allowing mining companies to leverage the full consumer device
ecosystem while maintaining explosion protection compliance.
