  • Intelligent assistance systems and digital solutions: Liebherr takes the next step towards the connected construction site and mine

    Whether on a construction site, in a quarry or in a mine: safety requirements and the need for greater productivity continue to rise. Liebherr meets these requirements with connected assistance systems and digital solutions that provide machine operators with targeted and helpful support, whilst optimising workflows, maintenance and fleet management. In the Technology Pavilion at the Liebherr booth at steinexpo, stand A27, experts will be demonstrating these technologies to visitors.

    Greater precision and efficiency in day-to-day use

    Intelligent assistance systems relieve machine operators of repetitive tasks and help ensure that work processes are carried out with precision. To achieve greater accuracy in earthworks, 2D and 3D machine control systems are used to assist operators in carrying out precise excavation and grading work. Automatic functions such as the Bucket Filling Assist (BFA) help when loading material. The system is available for Liebherr Generation 8 crawler excavators and automates penetration into the stockpile to achieve consistent fill levels, optimised loading cycles and boom functions for more efficient material handling.

    The portfolio is complemented by the Liebherr weighing system – each with specific functions for articulated dump trucks and wheel loaders respectively – which enables precise loading of transport vehicles in material handling and quarry operations. Overloading and underloading are avoided, thereby making transport processes more productive. At the same time, intelligent features such as adaptive work lighting and the integrated tyre pressure monitoring system for wheel loaders enhance operator comfort and contribute to cost-effective machine operation.

    Enhanced safety in day-to-day operations

    Safety is a key driver of technological development at Liebherr. Active pedestrian detection with brake assist detects pedestrians and moving obstacles in the wheel loader’s working area. This enables potential hazards – particularly on confined construction sites and in mining – to be identified at an early stage, and operators to be warned by means of audible and visual signals. Liebherr is showcasing this technology both in the pavilion and in action on its Liebherr XPower wheel loaders.

    The Skyview 360° camera system uses multiple cameras to provide a panoramic view around the wheel loader and significantly reduces blind spots. When combined with active person detection, the system enhances safety in quarry and construction site applications. The OAS assistance systems fitted to Liebherr crawler dozers are also designed with safety and efficiency in mind. With functions offering varying degrees of automation, they assist machine operators with demanding tasks whilst also laying the foundations for future innovative applications.

    Digitalisation and connectivity: from the driver’s cab to mobile training solutions

    The user interface is also being continuously developed. With the INTUSI operating concept, Liebherr simplifies interaction between people and machines. The adaptive and intuitively designed system brings together assistance functions and machine data on a central user interface and is being gradually integrated into various machines. Furthermore, innovative concepts for human-machine interaction demonstrate how the workplaces of the future may change. These include solutions featuring joystick steering and cabs without a traditional steering wheel, which enhance operating comfort and create a modern, ergonomic working environment.

    The Liebherr simulator allows users to experience modern machine technology first-hand. Visitors can use the simulator to experience typical work scenarios under realistic conditions. The mobile training solution combines original controls from earthmoving machines with a realistic representation of the working environment. At the same time, the solution highlights the benefits of practical and safe driver training.

    Digital services for greater efficiency in machine operation

    Digital solutions such as MyLiebherr Maintenance and Performance, the MyAssistant app and IoMine make information accessible and provide greater transparency regarding machine conditions, maintenance requirements and fleet performance. MyLiebherr Maintenance centralises machine conditions, maintenance and service history. By linking up with digital solutions such as MyAssistant, problems can be identified at an early stage and maintenance can be planned more accurately. MyLiebherr Performance provides performance and consumption data to help optimise capacity utilisation and operating costs. Data View, which forms part of the IoMine Maintain portfolio, enables the direct comparison of the condition and performance of all machines in a vehicle fleet through clear and concise analyses. This is based on data from machine events and Liebherr assistance systems. These applications provide customers with valuable and comprehensive support to reduce downtime, carry out targeted maintenance and increase the availability of their machinery.

    The range is complemented by LiDIAG Customer, which makes diagnostic data directly available and speeds up service processes – from troubleshooting and reading out machine parameters to software updates and hydraulic settings.

    Technology for the construction site of tomorrow

    With intelligent assistance systems, digital services and connected machines, Liebherr demonstrates how safety, productivity and machine availability can already be specifically improved today on construction sites, in quarries and in mines. These technologies highlight the potential of digitalisation and automation for the efficient use of modern machinery. At steinexpo 2026, visitors will be able to experience these developments first-hand in the Technology Pavilion and in the machinery demonstration area.

  • Liebherr Mining Excavator R 9200

    The Beeshoek Iron Ore mine is situated approximately 65 km south of Assmang’s flagship Khumani Iron Ore mine, near the town of Postmasburg in the Northern Cape province of South Africa. Composed of five open-cast pits, Beeshoek’s production output is around 3.4 mt/a. The mine is jointly managed by ARM Ferrous – a subsidiary of African Rainbow Minerals – and Assore, through Assmang. Beeshoek undertakes its own mining but also contracts out a smaller proportion of its mining requirement through a plant and hire contract, attributed to South Africa based company, Basil Read. This company is active in opencast mining, civil engineering projects, road construction, building, mixed integrated housing developments, property development and related services, and is among Liebherr’s major customers. As of 2015, Basil Read holds a fleet of twenty Liebherr mining excavators, including five units operated at Beeshoek mine. To sustain Assmang’s ambitious stripping target and initially as part of a pre-serie agreement with Liebherr – Mining Equipment Colmar SAS, Colmar/France, Basil Read was the very first operator of the new R 9200 since February 2015. As this machine demonstrated high performances and has successfully passed the field test period, not Basil Read but Beeshoek decided to purchase it.

    During the field tests, the observed availability on the R 9200 working at Beeshoek exceeded 90 %. The machine has been developed to promote easy and fast maintenance: its service flap is accessible from the ground level and offers direct access to fuel, engine oil, grease, hydraulic oil refilling points. Fitted with Wiggins quick couplings for all fluids as a standard feature, the required time to refill each fluid is consistently reduced to minimize machine downtime. In addition, all major service points are centralized for easy access from the unique central service platform, with all systems and design solutions simplified to facilitate maintenance. All of these features promote fast service enabling to reduce the average service time to minimum. The R 9200’s high uptime is also possible thanks to its 30 h of fuel autonomy in standard configuration and its fuel burn efficiency.

    R 9200 has been designed to fully answer requirements of the mining industry. In addition to the integration of components designed in-house by Liebherr, the R 9200 design is inspired from larger, proven Liebherr mining shovels and new technologies of the new generation excavators. Undercarriage employs the “Hook & Key” system with horizontal bolting to link between its side frame and central piece for highest torsion resistance and is equipped with heavy duty rock protections preventing accidental component damage. To promote hydraulic components and diesel engine continuous efficiency, the R 9200 includes numerous advanced features to support cooling efficiency of sub-systems avoiding overheating. This is particularly appreciated in such conditions like Beeshoek, where temperatures frequently reach up to 50 °C.

    The R 9200 is powered by a single Cummins QSK38 diesel engine, delivering a gross power output of 810 kW. Ensuring the optimal balance of energy consumption and power output, the R 9200 maximizes net power which is available for the working process. Fitted with the Liebherr-patented Litronic Plus system for intelligent power management and using a closed-loop swing circuit – unique in 200 t class – the R 9200 achieves super-fast cycle times as measured at 23 s at Beeshoek. Fitted with a 10 m3 XHD bucket to load material with a loose density of 2.3 t/m3, Basil Read’s R 9200 efficiently loads 100 t dump trucks in five passes (Figure 1). A performance study conducted at Beeshoek demonstrated the R 9200 able to achieve an average production of 1,850 t/h.
