Glückauf! 2/2022

Regulations aimed at protecting the environment and enforcing respect for human rights and the rights of children along the global supply chains now mean increasing liability obligations for the industrial sector, while raw material producers are also required to commit to sustainable mining practices both at home and abroad. The previous edition of Mining Report Glückauf picked up on this theme with a review of the impact that a sustainable raw materials policy is having on the mining industry. We also signalled that this topic would again be addressed in the current issue, when we would be focusing on technological solutions aimed at achieving a sustainable mining sector. Hyperspectral sensors, e. g., are now being used in all kinds of areas, from the exploration of deposits through … Read more

Hyperspectral Sensing to Boost AMD Monitoring in Post-Mining Scenery

Downscaling (multi-scale) scheme for hyperspectral sensing from high spatial coverage of satellite based sensors to high spectral resolution of drone-borne/ terrestrial sensors and hyperspectral data cube scanning general concept. Source/: THGA

The evolving hyperspectral sensors have become a big ally for a large range of applications in remote sensing for the monitoring of a variety of earth ecosystems and processes (natural and anthropogenic). The processes occurring within the mining life cycle are not an exception. Hyperspectral sensors have been widely used in a large number of applications ranging from exploration, operation and post-mining. In this work, the authors explore particularly the use of hyperspectral methods to contribute to the monitoring of one of the most important environmental phenomena that many mining operations might face: acid mine drainage (AMD). Failure of accurately monitoring and remediation of such complex …

Smart Technology for Smart Mining – Opportunities for the German Mining Supply Industry

Critical topics for mining suppliers in the coming years. Results of a workshop on the road map 2035 from November 2018. Source: VDMA

So many texts, including “smart” ones, have been and continue to be published about technology and mining that one is tempted to say that everything has already been said. But the many different contexts in which the term “smart” appears call for closer consideration: What it is understood to mean, how the various players deal with it and what goal is being pursued with its use. The article presents an analysis from the perspective of VDMA Mining in its position as a part of the largest industrial network in Europe.

Economic and at the same time environmentally acceptable mining of small vertical ore bodies and veins to great depths has always been a challenge for miners. The Bauer cutter system, widely used in civil engineering, has been further developed for applications in exploration and mining, to a sustainable system for selective mining with a focus on small vertical ore bodies and veins, as well as residual ore in open pit operations.

Hard Coal 2021

Hard coal imports to Germany. Source: VDKi

Events during the year 2021 illustrate very clearly that supply security is and will remain one of the most important topics of the energy transition. The penultimate act in the nuclear power exit in Germany, the shutdown of 4 GW of power plant capacity, points to the importance of the remaining base of controllable, secure capacity. Securing power supply during the energy transition is also a priority for the Coal Importers Association (VDKi), Berlin/Germany, because the availability of electrical power is indispensable as the share of production from renewable energies …
