Emission-free customised vehicle for the Morsleben mine rescue service: A technical milestone from Bergmann Maschinenbau

The Morsleben Mine Rescue Service has taken delivery of incredible, zero-emission special-purpose vehicles from the German company Bergmann Maschinenbau GmbH & Co. KG, marking a new era in rescue operations. The R803e is a truly remarkable vehicle (Figure 1), developed and manufactured in Meppen/Germany. It’s the epitome of German engineering, setting new standards for use in extreme conditions.

Powered by six high-performance lithium-iron-phosphate battery modules (80 V, 48 kWh), the vehicle delivers an impressive peak power of 46 kW, ensuring emission-free mobility over long periods of use. The water-cooled electric motor controllers ensure precise and efficient control of the permanent four-wheel drive and four-wheel steering. This cutting-edge technology not only protects the environment, but also the health of workers in potentially hazardous and polluted environments.

Developing the R803e was a challenging task. The challenge was to combine the various customer requirements in a compact vehicle. It had to be ensured that all the necessary equipment, including the water volume, water pump and other technical components, could be integrated into the vehicle without compromising its compact dimensions of less than 5 m in length, less than 2 m in width and less than 2 m in height. The result is a design that, despite its small size, provides all the essential functions and is therefore perfectly suited to underground use.

With an impressive turning radius of approximately 2,1 m and hydraulic all-wheel steering, the R803e manoeuvres effortlessly through the tightest and most challenging underground conditions. In addition, the robust pendulum joint ensures optimum stability even on difficult terrain or unpaved roads.

The R803e is a true all-rounder, ready for any challenge! Equipped with a 2,000 l GRP water tank and an EN 733 centrifugal pump capable of delivering up to 1,000 l/min at 10 bar pressure, the vehicle is ideally equipped for firefighting and hazardous situations. A clear LED display on the pump control panel monitors water level, battery capacity and pump speed to ensure full control in critical situations. Standard Storz connectors and generous storage space for equipment such as the 50 m C-52 hose and foam mixing system complete the vehicle.

The R803e is the ultimate choice for both underground and public road use. With a top speed of 25 km/h, it’s perfect for navigating industrial and commercial areas, construction sites and tunnels. Its low unladen weight and 6,500 kg total weight give you the flexibility you need without compromising on safety.

The R803e can also be transported by crane to hard-to-reach areas underground. Two suspension seats ensure a comfortable ride even on uneven terrain, while a reversing camera with integrated monitor makes manoeuvring in difficult conditions easier.

The new R803e mine rescue vehicle is an example of Bergmann Maschinenbau’s innovative strength and commitment to customised special solutions. Despite its compact design, the vehicle can accommodate all special customer requirements, from the water pump to the fire-fighting equipment. This is a great achievement for the family company, which is dedicated to developing environmentally friendly and safe technologies.

The new R803e mine rescue vehicle from Bergmann Maschinenbau is a true technical milestone for underground operations. The Morsleben mine rescue team has opted for state-of-the-art technology and environmentally friendly mobility.
