Houghton-Fluid HYDROCOR CV 50 DF – operating the shield support at the German Mining Museum Bochum

The German Mining Museum (Deutsches Bergbau-Museum Bochum – DBM) is the most important mining museum in the world and one of the most visited museums in Germany, with around 365,700 visitors per year. In the underground visitors’ mine, the world of coal mining is described in detail and amongst other exhibits a complete shearer face with hydraulic shields is installed. For many years, Houghton’s testing and preservation fluid, Hydrocor CV 50 DF, approved by major equipment manufacturers like Caterpillar and Joy, as well by the German mining authority of the Bezirksregierung Arnsberg, has been used in the hydraulic system that powers this longwall (Figure 1).

Houghton is happy to report that DBM have once again selected its HYDROCOR CV 50 DF as their preferred fluid, to be certain of continued trouble-free hydraulic operation when demonstrating the longwall to future visitors. An engraved metal plate at the entrance of the longwall will inform visitors that HYDROCOR CV 50 DF is the hydraulic fluid selected by DBM for use in this prestigious exhibit.

On 30th November 2015, Houghton Deutschland GmbH donated a quantity of HYDROCOR CV 50 DF to DBM free of charge. The handover took place in front of the longwall, attended by museum Vice Director, Dr. Ing. Siegfried Müller and his colleague Willi Fockenberg, along with Houghton’s Global Mining Segment Leader, Dirk Broska and Product Manager, Jörg Kreuz. (Figure 2)
