Ulrich Paschedag (Figure 1) retired from the TH Georg Agricola University (THGA), Bochum/Germany, at the end of February 2024. He studied mining engineering at the RWTH Aachen University where he achieved his diploma. He then decided to join the central institution for research and development in the hard coal industry, Bergbau-Forschung (today DMT) in Essen, working at the Institute for Road-heading and Mining. He was involved in countless underground measurements at mining machines, mainly plow systems. Furthermore, he conducted surface trials using artificial coal faces. During this time, he also pursued his PhD at TU Berlin University.

In 1991, he switched to Gewerkschaft Eisenhütte Westfalia Lünen, where he held several positions in sales and marketing through six mergers and acquisitions, i. e. DBT, Bucyrus, Caterpillar Global Mining. For three years he worked in the USA. From 2007 to 2013, he worked as a managing director at the Lünen headquarters. Amongst other things, in this time he was responsible for the successful development and market introduction of the intelligent CST drive system for face conveyors and the revitalization of the export of automated plow systems into China and other countries.

In 2015, Paschedag joined the THGA, where he served as a Vice President and Professor for International Mining for his first seven years. Amongst other things, he was responsible for the introduction of a new English master course and the creation of the University Development Plan up to 2022. Furthermore, the Research Center of Post-Mining (FZN) was part of the department which he headed, before he led this Center as its own department in 2019. After significant growth in turnover and headcount, he handed it over to his successor Prof. Christian Melchers. Finally, Paschedag was responsible as the Head of Strategy for the application of a large new building for the FZN in Herne from 2021 on. (Paschedag/Si.)
